How To Start a New Single Player Game in Civilization 4

Back to Top 1. Run the Civilization 4 executible from the desktop, file folder, or through Steam. Make sure you have a No-CD patch or the disc inside your CD/DVD drive if you are not running it via Steam.
Back to Top 2. Press the "Single Player" button on the main menu.
Back to Top 3. To get playing as soon as posible, press the "Play Now" button on the Single-Player Menu.
Back to Top 4. Select a map type that will suit you. Continents, Fractal, and Archipelago are good maps to start with. In this example, Fractal is selected. When you have selected a map, press the "OK" button in the lower right-hand corner.
Back to Top 5. Configure your world settings. Choose a climate, a sea level, and a map size. These settings represent a rocky climate, a random sea level, and a large map size. When you have selected your settings, press the "OK" button in the lower right-hand corner.
Back to Top 6. Choose your civilization and your leader. All leaders have special traits that can help your civilization. In this example, Peter of Russia is selected as the leader, with Russia being the civilization. When you have selected a leader, press the "OK" button in the lower right-hand corner.
Back to Top 7. Choose your difficulty and game speed. Difficulty affects bonuses given to you and the AI. Noble is the even difficulty, with no bonuses given, on easier difficulties, the human player (you) gets a bonus, while on harder difficulties, the AI gets a bonus. Game speed affects how fast the game is played, with Marathon being the slowest (5x slower than normal), and Quick being the fastest (2x faster than normal). This example has an Emperor difficulty with a normal speed. When you have selected a difficulty level and speed, press the "OK" button in the lower right-hand corner.
Back to Top 8. Congratulations, you can now begin playing Civilization 4!
