1. Administrivia

Charlene welcomed visitors from Greendale, WI public schools: (Jeff Johnson, (Director of Technology), Kim Amidzich (Assistant Principal), Dan Rogaczewksi and Katie Hinz (Social Studies teachers).
Pending budget approval, a 2005-06 cadre of PowerRangers will be invited to apply next month.
The final PowerRanger meeting of the year will be held on Friday, May 20 in room 1200. All PowerRangers are expected to attend

Benefits for Learning

Art

Scan their black and white photos into photoshop and added text and color

Students learned procedure to understand scanner and tools on photoshop.

Applied Arts

Create a magazine about children from birth to age 6.

Students learned how a child develops in all stages of development.

Communication Arts

Revision and editing of a model student essay using digital projector hooked up to teacher’s laptop

Students focus easily on a projected image, all can contribute ideas to revision procedure. It is a hands-on activity with interaction.

Imovie

Practices all the skills emphasized in English- Editing, transitions, revision, etc.

Internet research databases in library for a pre-reading activity

Educates students how to use a research technology and prepares them for the novel.

Macbeth Trailer

Gives a visual focus of the play- connecting literary elements to visual elements

Online grammar quizzes to prepare for final exam.

Students had immediate feedback to see how well they were doing.

Inspiration

Enables students to move large objects of info and identify relationships-assists visual learning

Math

Webquest&emdash;Graphing parabolas

Discovery of rules/properties on their own helped them to remember better due to the personal investment.

Used Curvis Pro for students- displays the odd/even behavior of functions.

Students could visually see how functions change depending on its order and whether it was even/odd (or +/- coefficient).

Use Geo Sketch Pad to explore the equation of a circle.

Visual and dynamic representation of algebraic concept.
Enables discovery where pen and paper would not.

Using *GSP to learn trigonomic transformations

Ability to see dynamic changes of given problems, versus static paper and scissors model

Geometer’s Sketchpad

Allows the students to identify patterns in geometry easily.

Photo scavenger hunt, photo slides in PowerPoint.

Students found pictures of shapes studied and related geometry to the real world

Online solutions for AP Statistics

The students received immediate feedback on practice AP problems.

Music

MiBac music lessons- plays synthesized and recorded examples to identify chord progressions

Allows students to isolate what they need to hear and then use it in class.

Physical Welfare

P.E. webpage for the freshman classroom activities and lessons.

Enables students to take practice tests and answer test questions.

Web-based project on fitness

Students gather a variety of data from multiple sources.

Photogates and LoggerPro 3.3 to gather data to later analyze the velocities of a rollercoaster at various points.

Allowed for more than just a theoretical discussion of what kinetic energy should be, but to calculate actual kinetic energy and figure out heat loss.

Online virtual earthquake activity

Helped students visualize information. Students “modeled” being a geologist.

Application of knowledge to real world scenarios. Students learn things we do not have time for in class.

It lays every aspect of the word out and makes connections for students. It forces them to make connections between ideas.

Student PowerPoint to teach materials.

Students enjoyed presenting to the class and learning for themselves and from each other instead of the teacher

Imovie- students write a script related to a play from class, video tape, and edit.

They were able to enhance the message of the story using different places, objects, music, etc.

Created a tour of a city and area in a German speaking country

They can go places they cannot really go within class, find out about weather, currencies, sites, prices, etc.

Fairytale presented by students using animation, script, and sound.

Students were able to practice the language in a fun and interactive way.

3. Best Practices

Several PowerRangers shared projects from their classrooms.
4th hour
Chris Salituro shared how he is using Turnitin.com for Plagiarism prevention and as a discussion tool.
Joe Geocaris and Carly Wells demonstrated how AppleWorks and the data projector is being used for writing prompts.
Kathy Lehn was not able to share her student PowerPoint projects due to lack of time. Students create presentations with no words, only pictures, and must present in Spanish to explain the pictures. We hope to see these next year Kathy!!

5th hour
Bree Fischer shared the webquest models used in Science
Manolo Rider-Sanchez shared examples of student PowerPoint projects.

6th hour
Neal Roys shared his "hot dog" review techniques.
Scott Williams shared examples of student iMovie projects.
Jori Saunders was not able to share her student projects due to lack of time.
