Speak with parents about technology --

IDEAS: Ask parents about the type(s) of technology used at home.

• How is it helping parent-student relationship?
• Does technology hinder or help communication?
  

IDEAS: Discuss methods of using technology as a communication tool between teachers, parents, and students.

• Email - How can you communicate your email address to parents? Have parents activated their Edline accounts?
• Fax - Do you know the fax # of the machine nearest your office area?
• Edline course page / teacher web page - Consider posting one or more of the following: objectives, reviews, assignment sheets, links
• Grades and student progress - Now available by publishing to Edline. (Parents can select the notification option in Edline and receive an email each time a report is uploaded).

Defining ‘technology’ in a classroom setting:

Light technology vs. High technology

• light technology: pen/pencil, velcro, the wheel, etc.
• high technology: calculators, computers, digital cameras, etc

Discuss with parents how course material is related to technology (life-long skills).

• What technology do you use in your class to complement or enhance curriculum?
• Ability to adapt to changes in technology; must have skills to adapt successfully
• Information-gathering using technology; information literacy using technology
• Technology to assist special needs students in mainstreamed classes
  

What technology is available to SHS students?

Student access to technology at SHS

• Hours of computer lab
  M-Th: 7a-8p
  Fridays: 7a-3:30p
• Computers available in BOTH resource centers
• Students can create DVD’s using iMovie in AV
• Students can rent equipment such as video cameras, boom boxes etc w/ ID

Using technology during your Open House presentation:

IDEAS:

• Use PowerPoint, slideshow to display information/ outline
• Use MIL-Karts or computers in room
• Show video/ DVD etc.
• CD burned with course information (health classes)
• Calculators

How do you set up presentation technology in your classroom? -- (logistical concerns)

• Contact Todd Slotten, David Popper, or Jean Harrison to “outfit” your particular classroom with the proper cabling from the TV, or to request a data projector
• Contact Charlene or Pat to check out computer dongle “connectors” or “remote” presenters (limited availability)
• Consult with RAT division representative
