STEP 3 - PROPOSAL AND PRESENTATION SKETCHES

I. OBJECTIVES - Upon the completion of this step, the student should be able to:

A. Follow the steps of Phase 2 of the "Design Process" for a product design project;
B. Describe alternate methods for generating ideas and solutions to problems;
C. Describe and prepare a "Verb List" for a product design project;
D. Prepare a "List of Attributes - Obvious & Not-so-obvious" for a product design project;
E. Describe and prepare "Engineering Sketches" for communicating ideas and solutions for a product design project;
F. Document design activities using a "Time Log" for a design project;
G. Follow the steps of Phase 3 of the "Design Process" for a product design project;
H. Refine possible solutions for a product design project;

II. REFERENCES - The following list contains textbooks, reference books, pamphlets, audio-visuals, and hand-out sheets that will help you learn about this step:

A. Goetsch, Nelson, Chalk, pp. 791-799 & 76-87.
B. Jensen & Helsel, pp. 432-434.
C. DeJong, Rising, Almfeldt, pp. 271-283 & 13-23.

III. ASSIGNMENTS - The following list of activities and problems will help you understand the objectives for this step and provide practical applications to help you acquire the skills needed to continue with the next step:

A. Access the
"Tech Draw Server" to down load a copy of the Study Questions for Step 3. You may printout the Study Questions for Step 3 and write in the answers or you may save the file and complete using a computer.

B. Complete a Division Sheet for Step 3. The division sheet should have a .75" margin at the top, rightside, and bottom of the page and a 1" margin at the leftside of the page. Be sure to include the title of the step in large letters (.75" h. x .5" w.) centered at top of page; the step number in medium letters (.5" h. x .4." w.) in the lower right corner of page; and your name in small letters (.25" h. x .2" w.) in the lower left corner of page. Create a "TIME LOG" form that you could use to record the "activities", "dates" and "times" spent on a project. Place the "Time Log" in the center of your division sheet. See Sample.

C. Refer to your textbook and prepare a "Verb List" with responses for the design project you described in your
"Statement of Problem". Must be typed for AC credit.

D. Prepare a "List of Attributes"
, obvious and not-so-obvious, for the design project you described in your "Statement of Problem". Must be typed for AC credit.

E. Prepare
"Engineering Sketches" on 1/8" graph paper for the BEST idea you identified in your "Progress Report". Use multiview and pictorials views with enough detail to explain the overall appearance and individual parts concisely and clearly. Several small parts can be placed on one sheet to conserve paper. Show and label all standard parts. Alternate "Engineering Sketches" of an optional solution are required for AC credit.

F. Use the form you created for your division sheet and complete a
"Time Log" for your design project. Must be typed for AC credit.

G. Consult with your client to review your
"Progress Report" and complete a "Review/Approval Form" so you can continue with the next phase of the "DesignProcess". Must be typed for AC credit.
