STEP 5 - PRECISION DIMENSIONING

I. OBJECTIVES - Upon the completion of this step, the student should be able to:

A. Describe the practice of "Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing";
B. Define the terms used with "Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing";
C. List and describe the four "Modifiers" used with "Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing";
D. Describe, establish, and label "Datums" on design detail drawings;
E. List the five types of "Geometric Tolerances";
F. List the four characteristics of "Form Tolerances" and identify their symbols;
G. List the two characteristics of "Profile Tolerances" and identify their symbols;
H. List the three characteristics of "Orientation Tolerances" and identify their symbols;
I. List the three characteristics of "Location Tolerances" and identify their symbols;
J. List the two characteristics of "Runout Tolerances" and identify their symbols;
K. Describe a "Feature Control Symbol" and discuss the information included in the "Feature Control Symbol";
L. Use a "GDT" template and apply "Feature Control Symbols" to design detail drawings;

II. REFERENCES -
The following list contains textbooks, reference books, pamphlets, audio-visuals, and hand-out sheets that will help you learn about this step:

A. Goetsch, Nelson, Chalk, pp. 430-456
B. Jensen & Helsel, pp. 290-352
C. DeJong, Rising, Almfeldt, pp. 318-332

III. ASSIGNMENTS - The following list of activities and problems will help you understand the objectives for this step and provide practical applications to help you acquire the skills needed to continue with the next step:

A. Access the "Tech Draw Server" to down load a copy of the Study Questions for Step 5. You may printout the Study Questions for Step 5 and write in the answers or you may save the file and complete using the computer.

B. Complete a Division Sheet for Step 5. The division sheet should have a .75" margin at the top, rightside, and bottom of the page and a 1" margin at the leftside of the page. Be sure to include the title of the step in large letters (.75" h. x .5" w.) centered at top of page; the step number in medium letters (.5" h. x .4." w.) in the lower right corner of page; and your name in small letters (.25" h. x .2" w.) in the lower left corner of page. Show and label a minimum of 12 geometric dimensioning and tolerancing symbols, the 4 modifiers and a typical feature control frame. See Sample.

C. Complete Precision Dimensioning Exercise #1. Choose a method to view the dimensioning exercise, and complete the drawing according to the instructions provided in the specifications laid out by your instructor. -- Word DOC -- Adobe PDF -- Online GIF

D. Complete Precision Dimensioning Exercise #2. Choose a method to view the dimensioning exercise, and complete the drawing according to the instructions provided in the specifications laid out by your instructor. -- Word DOC -- Adobe PDF -- Online GIF

E. Complete Precision Dimensioning Exercise #3. Choose a method to view the dimensioning exercise, and complete the drawing according to the instructions provided in the specifications laid out by your instructor. -- Word DOC -- Adobe PDF -- Online GIF

F. Complete Precision Dimensioning Exercise #4. Exercise #4 is EXTRA CREDIT (and is required for anyone opting for accelerated credit) Dowload the VectorWorks file from the Tech draw server, and complete the drawing according to the instructions provided and the specifications laid out by your instructor.

G. Prepare "Design Detail Drawings" with complete geometric tolerancing and size description for three (3) parts from the "Design Layout Drawing" you prepared in Step 4 for the design project you described in your "Statement of Problem".

H. Prepare at least one additional
"Design Detail Drawing" with complete geometric tolerancing and size description from the "Design Layout Drawing" you prepared in Step 4 for the design project you described in your "Statement of Problem". (AC)
