UNIT 6 - INTRODUCTION TO AN ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

I. OBJECTIVES - Upon the completion of this step, the student should be able to:

A.Describe common departments found in a typical "Engineeering Department" of a company;
B. Describe the typical "Chain of Command" found in an engineering department;
C. Explain the purpose of an "ERC Meeting" in an engineering department;
D. Describe the purpose of an "ECO" in an engineering department;
E. Follow an "ECO" procedure for making changes to a drawing;
F. Describe and complete a "Revision Block" on a drawing of a product;
G. Explain the purpose of an "Invention Agreement" in an engineering department.
H. Explain the importance of "Checking" in the design and drawing of products;
I. Describe the two basic components common to most "Numbering Systems" for drawings;
J. Describe the difference between a "Bill of Materials" and a "Parts List" of a set of drawings;

II. REFERENCES - The following list contains textbooks, reference books, pamphlets, audio-visuals, and hand-out sheets that will help you learn about this step:

A. Goetsch, Nelson, Chalk, pp. 552-556.
B. Jensen & Helsel, pp. 32-33, 272, 274-275, 610-611.

III. ASSIGNMENTS - The following list of activities and problems will help you understand the objectives for this step and provide practical applications to help you acquire the skills needed to continue with the next step:

A. Access the "Tech Draw Server" to down load a copy of the Study Questions for Step 6. You may printout the Study Questions for Step 6 and write in the answers or you may save the file to your disk and type in the answers using AppleWorks.

B. Complete a Division Sheet for Step 6. Include the title of the step, step number, your name, and a layout for a "Revision Block" that could be used on your drawings.

C. Prepare an additional "Design Detail Drawing" for your project, discuss the design of the part another student, and submit an "Engineering Change Request" to your instructor for any changes needed to improve the the part.

D. Meet with your instructor to discuss the "ECR" and complete an "Engineering Change Order" for the revision(s) needed to the part.

E. Make the necessary change to the "Design Detail Drawing" including a "Revision Block" and all the necessary notations.

F. Prepare "Engineering Change Request" and "Engineering Change Order" forms for your company using the wordprocessor. (AC credit only)

G. Develop a "Numbering System" for your company's drawings. (AC credit only)
