STEP 5 - FOUNDATIONS
I. OBJECTIVES - Upon the completion
of this step the student should be able to:
A. Discuss the function of a foundation plan as part of a set
of working drawings;
B. Identify the building materials shown on a foundation plan;
C. Identify the symbols used on a foundation plan by therir name
and function;
D. Add wall thicknesses and footings to exterior and interior
walls;
E. Add piers and pads for columns;
F. Provide the necessary dimensions for complete size description;
G. Create tabular schedules for materials specified on the foundation
plan;
H. Label the drawing properly and neatly;
I. Provide an appropriate title block.

III. ASSIGNMENTS
A. Access the "Tech Draw Server" to down load a copy of the Study Questions for Step 5. You may printout the Study Questions for Step 5 and write in the answers or you may save the file to your disk and type in the answers using ClarisWorks.
B. Complete a Division Sheet for Step 5. The division sheet should have a .75" margin at the top, right side, and bottom of the page and a 1" margin at the left side of the page. Be sure to include the title of the step in large letters (.75" h. x .5" w.) centered at top of page; the step number in medium letters (.5" h. x .4." w.) in the lower right corner of page; and your name in small letters (.25" h. x .2" w.) in the lower left corner of page. Illustrate examples of Foundation Plan components including the foundation walls, footings, pilasters, piers, pads, welded wire mesh, and floor reinforcing. See Sample.
C. Using your modular floor plan drawing, layout a Foundation Plan for your commercial building including:
- Pilasters and Pads placed along two exterior walls on modular grid lines
- Foundation Walls and Footings placed between Pilasters and Pads
- Grade beams placed between Pilasters along two walls
- Piers and Pads placed below interior columns if needed
D. Using a copy of your Foundation Plan, prepare a Detailed Foundation Plan including:
- Overall length and width of building plus location dimensions for pilasters from edge to edge
- Label sizes (length, width and height) of pilasters, foundation walls, grade beams, footings, piers and pads
- Label floor slab and auxiliary materials (reinforcing, rigid insulation, moisture barrier, pea gravel or fill sand) in a note
- Title Block including drawing title, date, scale, page number box and your name.
E. The Foundation Plan will be graded on a 100 point scale. The grading sheet for this assignment can be downloaded by clicking here.
