STEP 7 - WALL SECTIONS & DETAILS

OBJECTIVES - Upon the completion of this step the student should be able to:

  • Explain the function of "Wall Sections and Building Details" as part of a set of working drawings for a small commercial building;
  • Identify the basic structural systems used for small commercial buildings;
  • Describe the basic components of masonry construction for small commercial buildings;
  • Describe the basic components of steel construction for small commercial buildings;
  • Prepare a typical "Wall Section" for a small commercial building;
  • Determine the number and location of supplemental, structural details needed to describe selected components of a small commercial building;
  • Add the necessary labels to the "Wall Section & Building Details" using appropriate lettering techniques;
  • Add an appropriate titleblock and complete the missing information;

ASSIGNMENTS

  1. Access the "Tech Draw Server" to down load a copy of the Study Questions for Step 7. You may printout the Study Questions for Step 7 and write in the answers or you may save the file to your disk and type in the answers using ClarisWorks.
  2. Complete a Division Sheet for Step 7. The division sheet should have a .75" margin at the top, right side, and bottom of the page and a 1" margin at the left side of the page. Be sure to include the title of the step in large letters (.75" h. x .5" w.) centered at top of page; the step number in medium letters (.5" h. x .4." w.) in the lower right corner of page; and your name in small letters (.25" h. x .2" w.) in the lower left corner of page. Prepare an illustration depicting a Structural Detail including all details from the 4" poured concrete floor slab to the bottom of the foundation.
    All parts should be labeled by name, material and size. See Sample
  3. Using your Floor and Structural Plans, prepare a typical Wall Section including all building materials from the footing to the top of an exterior wall. Utilize the "Wall Section Grading Sheet" as a guide during construction of the detail. Label all components by name, material and size and add vertical dimensions. See Sample
  4. Create an isometric cut away view of the Wall Section drawing using full color to distinguish different components and submit for EXTRA CREDIT (AC)
