STEP 9 - MECHANICAL SYSTEMS & PLANS

OBJECTIVES - Upon the completion of this step the student should be able to:

  • Explain the function of "Mechanical Systems & Plans" as part of a set of working drawings for a small commercial building;
  • List the three primary mechanical systems of a small commercial building;
  • List the two secondary mechanical systems of a small commercial building;
  • Identify the basic components of an electrical power system for a small commercial building;
  • Identify the symbols used on an "Electrical Plan" to locate electrical components;
  • Use the "Modular Floor Plan" as a guide and prepare an "Electrical Plan" showing locations of outlets, switches, and fixtures for a small commercial building;
  • Add the necessary labels and a "Symbol Key" to the "Electrical Plan" using appropriate lettering techniques;
  • Describe a "Power Riser Diagram" and place this information on the "Electrical Plan";
  • Add an appropriate titleblock and complete the missing information;
  • IDentify the basic components of a HVAC system for a small commercial building;
  • Identify the symbols used on an "Heating, Ventilating, and Air-conditioning Plan" to locate HVAC components;
  • Use the "Modular Floor Plan" as a guide and prepare an "HVAC Plan" showing locations of components, controls, and duct work for a small commercial building;
  • Add the necessary labels to the "HVAC Plan" using appropriate lettering techniques;
  • Add an appropriate titleblock and complete the missing information;
  • Identify the basic components of a plumbing system for a small commercial building;
  • Identify the symbols used on a "Plumbing Plan" to locate fixtures and supply, waste, and vent lines;
  • Use the "Modular Floor Plan" as a guide and prepare a "Plumbing Plan" showing routing and sizing of plumbing components for a small commercial building;

    Prepare a Division Sheet for Step 9 including a title, a step number, your name and an illustration depicting a "Electrical Riser or Block Diagram" for your building. See Sample.

    Using a copy of your "Floor Plan", prepare "Electrical Plans" of your building with separate layers for each of the following: Lighting fixtures and Switches; Emergency lights (Exits); Convience and Special outlets; Main Switch, Distribution Panels, and Circuit Breakers; and Telephone, Intercom, Audio-video and Computer Jacks. Each drawing should include a Symbol Key. Prepare a print of each layer for grading.

    Using a copy of your "Floor Plan", prepare a Transformer Detail Plan for your building. See Sample for details.

    Using a copy of your "Floor Plan", prepare "Plumbing Plans" of your building with separate layers for each of the following: Plumbing Fixtures; Supply Lines; Waste and Vent Lines; and Natural gas or compressed air lines. Each drawing should include a Symbol Key. Prepare a print of each layer for grading.

    Using a copy of your "Floor Plan", prepare "HVAC Plans" of your building with separate layers for each of the following: HVAC Equipment, Supply Ducts, and Return Ducts. Each drawing should include a Symbol Key. Prepare a print of each layer for grading. (AC)

    Using a copy of your "Floor Plan", prepare "Security Plans" of your building with separate layers for each of the following: Control Panels, Sensors, and Alarms. Each drawing should include a Symbol Key. Prepare a print of each layer for grading. (EX)
